Dreams and Demons
Dreams and Demons (2015) is a tone poem for wind band which depicts both pleasant dreams and nightmares during sleep. The opening chorale begins the descent from the waking world into dreams, which initially take forms both lively and placid. The nightmares soon begin, however. Demons in the dream, represented through both aggressive and subliminal sections, torment the dreamer. He finds a place of rest, but the demons eventually find their way back to haunt him. Both dreams and demons clash in the final section, and the opening chorale makes a reappearance in a more victorious setting, as the dreamer defeats the demons. The piece finally settles as the dreamer continues his relaxed sleep.
